A crown is a dental restoration that is used to protect damaged, cracked or broken down teeth. It fits over the remaining part of a prepared tooth, making it strong and giving it the shape of a natural tooth preserving functionality. A crown can also be known as a ‘cap’. Crowns may also be used to improve the appearance of a tooth, protect a root treated tooth or to hold a denture/bridge in place.
Evolve Dentistry is fortunate to have patients travel from around the Bristol and Portishead area to see us for their cosmetic dentistry and dental crowns
A crown is advised if an old crown needs to be replaced or the tooth would benefit for the strength that a crown can provide when a filling would not be suitable. Cosmetic Dentistry often requires the use of many techniques to restore a broken down smile and crowns are one of the options.
The vast majority are made from tooth coloured high strength dental porcelain material. However Gold and other precious metals maybe used.
The tooth needs to shaped down by removing most of the outer surface, leaving an inner core. The amount of the tooth removed will be the same as the thickness of the crown, normally 1.5mm. Once the tooth is shaped, impressions (moulds) are made . The impressions will then be sent to the dental technician, along with an appropriate shade and other information needed for the crown to be made.
You will need to have at least two visits to our Portishead Dental Practice: the first for the preparation, impression, shade taking and fitting the temporary crown; and the second to fit the permanent crown. There will usually be about 2 weeks in between appointments. When both yourself and the dentist are happy with the fit and appearance of the crown it will be fixed in place with special dental glue.
No. Appropriate local anaesthetic is used (if applicable) so the preparation should feel no different from a filling. If you are particularly nervous or anxious of the dentist then we have a dental sedation service that will help you to relax your way through treatment.
How long your crown lasts depends on how well you look after it.
Properly cared for crowns should last for many years. Crowns themselves
cannot decay, but decay can start where the edge of the crown joins the
tooth. It is therefore important to keep this area clean.
